Don't Put Yourself in the Corner

I heard a great quote today, and it really reminded me of my theory. The quote was: Guilt: punishing yourself before God doesn't. ~Alan Cohen

I realize that it could be taken as an anti-religion quote, but in order to avert any arguments or hurt feelings, I'm going to take a different spin on it. I feel that this quote explains my theory in very basic terms: even when no one else is going to punish you, you will punish yourself by feeling guilty. Unless you truly did something wrong, such as stealing something that wasn't yours, there is no need to punish yourself when no one else is going to do it.

  1. I agree that people should not punish themselves if they have not committed a major crime. If they punish themselves, they are only hurting themselves even more, especially if it is about something that will not have an important effect on their life. I have had this feeling happen to me several times before and I know that I just need to move on with my life.

  2. You are absolutely right, whenever I do something wrong I always feel like crap because I know I shouldn't have done it, even though other people don't think anything of it. It seems that I even punish myself whenever I don't do anything wrong, but that's just who I am.
